Issue 121 - 4D vision

Tesla Q2 Earnings Call

In yesterday’s Q2 update, Tesla beat the estimates and reported the fourth straight quarter of profits. Elon said he’s never been as excited about Tesla and its future as he is now, and we couldn’t agree more. Here’s a quick summary of the call:

  • Confirmed the next Gigafactory in Texas, near Austin. It’ll be the biggest one yet and Elon described it as “an ecological paradise” which will be open to the public.

  • Solar prices adjusted

  • FSD updates

    • “It’s getting to the point where I can get to work from home with almost no interventions.”
    • “FSD will be the largest financial step-change in history, overnight.”
    • The biggest transition in the FSD computer is going from 2D (image recognition) to 4D (video recognition).
  • Hints on Tesla making a compact vehicle as well as a high capacity one, but there’s still a long way to go before it happens

  • Tesla App Store coming

  • Tesla’s insurance telematics product will be available in California and a handful of other states by the end of the year

  • Berlin will have local cell production to serve their needs

Here are some great notes by @dburkland on Twitter. Thank you, Dan!

Software Updates

Traffic light and stop sign control coming to EU

Good news for Tesla owners in Europe. Tesla has contacted folks who are part of the Early Access Program announcing they will soon push the 2020.28.10 update which contains the much-awaited Traffic and Stop Sign Detection new feature. This feature will only be available in cars with FSD (Hardware 3 retrofits have already started in Europe as well).

AP to make lane changes automatically on city streets

It seems like AP can already make automatic lane changes on city streets in alpha. Production release coming up in ‘a few months’ (in Elon’s time πŸ˜‰). So exciting to see this happening and our cars becoming smarter!

Magnetic USB-C adapters

Not sure why Apple ever stopped selling magnetic battery chargers, it’s a brilliant feature. Glad that someone thought about this and implemented the same principle in USB-C adapters that we can use. Here’s the one recommended in the Twitter thread initiated by @mcjamez, thanks for sharing!

Don't forget to change your cabin filter

Tesla recommends replacing your cabin filters after 2 years of use. However, sometimes it needs to be replaced earlier due to a nasty smell (I’ve heard people refer to it both as a vinegar smell and a stinky sock) that is known to appear in the Model 3. And if you happen to be in the market for new filters, I recommend these HEPA cabin filters with activated charcoal to combat bad odors.

New lease option on the Model Y

This Reddit user has spotted a new lease option on the Model Y which was previously not available. Just remember that Tesla’s Model Y lease (as it does for the Model 3) doesn’t offer a buy-out option.

Remember that if you order a new Tesla you can use our referral code and get $1k of free Supercharging http://ts.la/ignacio9266

New Model S and Model X

Folks keep on speculating about a Model S and Model X refresh. Elon already said there will be no exterior refresh, but now Electrek is telling us about a ‘secret’ project called Palladium which would involve building new production lines for the Model S/X. According to this source, Tesla would be manufacturing new battery modules and drive units that would serve as the basis of the upcoming β€œPlaid” versions.

Resale & Referral Program

Model 3 resale value is over 5 times better than the industry average

An interesting study conducted by the car search engine iSeeCars.com, which analyzed over 6.9 million car sales to identify which vehicles experienced the most and least depreciation in the past three years. As it turns out, the Tesla Model 3 is able to retain its value over five times better than other EVs in the market.

Tesla doubles its referral reward for solar roof and panel installations

Last week, Tesla doubled the reward for people referring to new solar panel installations in a new push to accelerate its energy business. The prize is nows $400 for each solar referral- plus a brand new Powerwall after 10 solar referrals- and $100 award for the buyer.
