Issue 122 - Ten colors of steel
What does ‘universal’ mean? Basically, Tesla is going to update the Model 3 production lines in the US passing on the Model Y battery manufacturing improvements and eventually incorporating the Model Y heat pump in the Model 3 as well. No timelines have been shared yet.
Three-part video series explaining the complete Thermal management system of Model Y with octovalve and heat pump.
This Model 3 owner had hail damages (check out the pics 🙈🙈🙈) and Tesla and got an initial estimate of $25k to repair it. He has started a thread on Reddit sharing information and interactions with the insurance (Progressive). Hopefully, you don’t have to go through this, but if you do, or are in a similar boat, I hope this information is helpful.
Software Updates & Autopilot
Cool video by ‘Black Tesla’ showing Autopilot on residential roads with the latest update 2020.28.5. The update introduces the ability to increase the speed limit up to +5 mph when ‘Traffic and Stop sign detection’ is enabled to make the driving experience more natural. And looking at this video, it seems like it does the job!
Another goodie of the latest software update, 2020.28.5, is the ‘Passenger Face Vent’ feature. In an effort to make the car more efficient, this feature automatically disables the passenger face vents when no passenger is detected, lowering energy consumption in hot weather. This enhancement seems to require a physical component that is only present in the Model Y, this doesn’t mean that Tesla can’t introduce it in future Model 3s, but we doubt this will be available for the Model 3s already out there.
Check out this video of Autopilot taking over to avoid a semi tire on the road. The owner says AP took over ‘a split second’ before he reacted. In case you’re wondering, this is a Model 3 without FSD and Autopilot was engaged.
This innovation agency has created a robot to charge a Model 3. It is still an early version but the plan according to the employee who posted the video on Reddit is to integrate a sensor and camera to detect the car’s approach.
A few days ago Elon Musk said on Twitter that Cybertruck’s cold-rolled steel body could be heated to get different colors. It’s probably a long shot and most likely Tesla won’t be offering the Cybertruck in colors (at least initially, we think), but it’s good to know the option is there and maybe at some point or someone will come up with an aftermarket solution.
