Issue 113 - The leader in apocalypse technology

A few weeks ago, we shared some exclusive new pictures of the Cybertruck at Jay Leno’s Garage. The season opened last week, and the episode featuring Tesla’s Cybertruck was aired yesterday. The Cybertruck coverage is only about 6 minutes and 20 seconds (honestly, we were expecting more), but if you’re curious, you can see the whole segment on YouTube.

FSD upgrade in AP2 cars

A few months ago, there was some speculation around if Tesla cars with AP2.0 would be able to upgrade to FSD or not. The answer is yes, and it can be done right now if you’re also getting the MCU2 retrofit. Reddit user ‘chillaban’ has shared his experience so you can read more about it here. If you’ve purchased FSD and are waiting for the Infotainment upgrade to be available, know that you can just schedule an appointment and request it. Most likely, you’ll get an appointment to get both done at the same time.

Model 3 has lowered the price in the US

Tesla just updated the price of its Model 3 SR+ lowering it to $37,990 (-$2k) in the US. Prices elsewhere remain untouched, at least for now.

Model S/Model X LR and Performance versions’ price has also been lowered to $74,990 and $79,990 respectively (-$5k), but they no longer come with free Supercharging.

Off-Grid Tesla charging from solar and Powerwall

Our friends at Living Tesla have just published a very interesting video showing how to charge your house and Tesla Model 3 from solar during a power outage. Very informative and nicely put together!

Roadster’s rocket thrusters

One could think Elon was joking when he explained Jay Leno’s how the new Roadster rocket thrusters will work, but he actually wasn’t. “We’re gonna use ultra-high pressure compressed air. It’s a cold gas thruster. The main thruster will be behind the license plate. So for acceleration, it drops the license plate, and behind the license plate is a rocket thruster. It’s like full-on James Bond".

At this point, I can believe anything coming from Elon Musk. I just can’t wait to see it.

2020.16.2.1 and Pedestrian animations

The latest software update 2020.16.2.1 brings some UI changes to the Tesla Toybox and filters for charging but it also brings pedestrian animations. @blktsla shows us it all in his new video.

Cybertruck: To fit or not to fit

After all, it seems like the Cybertruck size is going to be pretty similar to the one unveiled back in October. Elon recently said on Twitter that even a 3% reduction would be too much. This leads us to think it will probably not fit in your average garage. He also said that they “want to be a leader in apocalypse technology”. As they say, go big or go home.

More about vehicle-to-grid

Last week, we highlighted a video talking about vehicle-to-grid. This video from Ingineerix debunks the theory that current cars are capable of vehicle-to-grid.

What the acronym?

As Tesla fan I find myself sometimes having to remember what are all those acronyms, here is a list of the ones you can find in this issue.

  • ATV - All-Terrain Vehicle
  • FSD - Full Self-Driving
  • AP2 - Autopilot hardware manufactured after October 2016 and before August 2017
  • MCU2 - Media Control Unit. Has a more powerful Intel x86_64 processor. All Model 3 have this version, as well as the Model S and Model X built after the end of March 2018.
