Deep-dive into Autopilot Shadow Mode

Since there is a lot of misinformation about how Tesla’s “tesla shadow mode” works, verygreen went on a Tweetstorm to try and throw some light about what it does do and doesn’t. In a sense it’s more advanced than what people think -lots of rules and triggers- but not what other people thought -like not constantly monitoring what the driver does and communicating discrepancies to Tesla. Pretty informative read, as always, from verygreen.

How much battery does Sentry mode consume?)

For now, Sentry mode can’t be permanently on by default. Speculation says the reason why is because it drains too much battery. Spamium just turned it on on his LR and reported on it on Reddit. The result is only 2.5% or 1.5kW. 6.5 hours of Sentry mode on which doesn’t seem bad at all!

Following up on his Tweetstorm, verygreen explained the software internals for AP2+. Since it is pretty hard to summarize it I would recommend you to go and read the whole thing on Reddit.

Sentry will become easier to turn on soon

A shortcut in the screen when you put the car into parking would be pretty handy, Elon agrees and says that in the future there will be an option for automatically turning it on all locations (including unknown). Elon, if you are listening, it would be great to be able to turn it on from the app as well!

  • FSD - Full Self-Driving
  • LR - Long Range
  • SW - Software
  • HW2+ - Hardware 2
  • AP2 - Autopilot hardware released after October 2016 and before August 2017
  • AP2.5 - Autopilot hardware released after August 2017
  • AP2+ - Autopilot hardware released after October 2016. Includes both AP2 and AP2.5
